Iran’s President Calls for Diplomacy Amid Rising Tensions with U.S.

The fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran is on the verge of collapse as Iranian officials have dismissed the possibility of a second round of talks in Islamabad, criticizing what they describe as unrealistic demands from the United States and recent maritime confrontations.

The current two-week truce is set to expire on Wednesday amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and a diplomatic stalemate. Although US representatives are scheduled to arrive in Islamabad on Monday to pursue further negotiations, Tehran has indicated it will not participate.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei confirmed there is no plan for additional dialogue, accusing the US of insincerity and of committing aggressive acts that have undermined diplomatic efforts.

The situation intensified on Sunday when the US military intercepted and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship accused of attempting to evade the American blockade of Iranian ports. US Central Command reported that Marines descended from helicopters to take control of the vessel after a six-hour standoff.

President Donald Trump announced the seizure on social media, stating, “We have full custody of their ship, and are seeing what’s on board!” Tehran condemned the action as “armed piracy,” asserting the ship was transporting commercial goods from China. The Iranian armed forces have promised retaliation but have delayed any immediate response to ensure the safety of the crew’s families.

This maritime confrontation has sent shockwaves through global markets, causing oil prices to surge amid fears of a complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route responsible for about 20% of the world’s oil supply.

Despite the deployment of US security equipment and personnel to Islamabad, the divide between the two nations remains wide. President Masoud Pezeshkian stressed that while diplomacy is the logical course, mistrust of Washington is an unavoidable reality.

Iranian officials have been explicit about their non-negotiable “red lines.” Baghaei reiterated that dismantling nuclear stockpiles is off the table and that Iran’s defensive missile program will not be compromised. He emphasized, “We do not believe in deadlines or ultimatums when it comes to safeguarding Iran’s national interests,” during a press briefing on Monday.

The situation is further complicated by President Trump’s recent threats to target Iranian civilian infrastructure if demands are not met. In retaliation, Iran has warned it would strike power and desalination facilities in neighboring Gulf countries hosting US bases.

As Islamabad prepares to receive a high-level US delegation, potentially led by Vice President JD Vance, the international community, including China, has urged both sides to sustain the ceasefire momentum to prevent the eight-week conflict from escalating into a full-scale regional war.
