ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a review meeting on Tuesday to discuss the privatisation of electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), emphasizing the need to expedite the process while maintaining full transparency.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to privatising loss-making state-owned enterprises, the Prime Minister underscored that all procedures must be conducted transparently. He further directed officials to develop a robust regulatory framework post-privatisation to ensure effective supervision and enhanced service quality.

During the meeting, officials provided an update on the privatisation progress. They revealed that the initial phase will involve the privatisation of Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO).

It was noted that expressions of interest for these three DISCOs have already been advertised in both national and international newspapers. Additionally, the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation has approved the transaction structure for these sales.

Officials also shared plans to launch roadshows this month aimed at attracting investors, with further international roadshows scheduled to target potential investors from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and China.

The meeting was attended by key government figures including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Power Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Privatisation Muhammad Ali, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, along with other senior officials.
