Karachi witnessed a notable escalation in street crime throughout March 2026, as revealed by a recent report from the Citizens Police Liaison Committee, Sindh (CPLC). The data highlights that 3,027 motorcycles were stolen during the month, alongside 440 cases of motorcycle snatching. Additionally, 1,265 mobile phones were reported stolen from citizens.

The report further indicates that 140 cars were stolen, with 17 vehicles taken through snatching incidents. The city also recorded 44 murder cases, six extortion incidents, and one kidnapping for ransom in the same period. Notably, there were no bank robbery cases reported in Karachi during March.

In a significant development aimed at enhancing urban security, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah approved Phase-II of the Karachi Safe City Project on Friday. This initiative focuses on bolstering surveillance and law enforcement capabilities across the metropolis through the deployment of over 2,300 smart cameras and advanced monitoring systems.

During a meeting of the Sindh Safe Cities Authority (SSCA) held at the Chief Minister’s House, the CM emphasized that leveraging modern technology to ensure public safety remains a key priority for his administration. The approved Phase-II includes the installation of 2,314 smart surveillance cameras, comprising 870 for general monitoring, 1,300 equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and facial recognition technology, 80 dedicated to traffic enforcement, 56 mobile surveillance units, and 8 cameras focused on traffic signal monitoring.
