WhatsApp has launched a new feature in its iOS beta version that allows users to view contact photos even when those contacts have not uploaded a profile picture. This innovative update automatically replaces blank profile images with photos stored in the user’s address book, enhancing the visual experience during chats.
This development builds on a previous beta release, version 25.21.10.74, which enabled users to import their profile pictures from Facebook or Instagram. With the latest enhancement, WhatsApp seeks to make conversations feel more personal by displaying familiar images when official profile photos are unavailable.
For the user’s own profile, if no photo has been uploaded, WhatsApp will show the image saved in the user’s contact card, but this is visible only to the user. Other contacts will continue to see the default placeholder unless they have the user’s photo saved in their own address book.
In terms of privacy, if a contact has restricted access to their profile photo, WhatsApp will substitute the hidden image with the photo saved in the user’s address book. This feature ensures that users can still recognize friends even when official photos are concealed due to privacy settings.
Contacts without a profile picture will no longer appear faceless in individual or group chats. Should a contact later upload a WhatsApp profile photo and make it visible, that image will automatically replace the address book photo, keeping the chat interface current and accurate.
Currently, this feature is available only to beta testers on the latest iOS update via TestFlight. Some users from the App Store may also gain early access as WhatsApp gathers wider feedback. This update significantly improves the personalization and visual appeal of WhatsApp conversations without requiring users to upload a profile picture themselves.
