Strike Reported Near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Plant Amid Rising Tensions

A projectile struck the vicinity of Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant late on Friday, but authorities confirmed there was no radiation leak or damage to the reactor, the United Nations atomic watchdog announced. This incident comes amid escalating military actions in the region, with Israeli forces reportedly targeting Iranian nuclear-related sites.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that Iran had informed them the Bushehr plant was functioning normally and had not experienced any technical or structural harm. This strike represents the third reported attack on Iranian nuclear facilities within the last ten days, underscoring the heightened tensions as the conflict in the Middle East extends into its second month.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military disclosed that it had conducted strikes on a heavy water reactor and a uranium processing facility located in central Iran, though it did not mention any operations near Bushehr. The IAEA’s Director General, Rafael Grossi, called for “maximum military restraint” to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of nuclear sites.

Iranian state media reported that the projectile hit the plant’s grounds around 11:40 pm local time (2010 GMT), attributing the attack to what it described as the “American–Zionist enemy.” No casualties or damage to the nuclear site were reported immediately following the incident. The Bushehr plant, situated in southwestern Iran, is the country’s sole operational nuclear power reactor and has been connected to the national grid since 2011, IAEA records.
