WhatsApp Web is preparing to introduce close to 50 new desktop themes aimed at improving the cross-platform messaging experience. Traditionally, the desktop version of WhatsApp has seen fewer updates compared to its mobile counterpart. In a significant development, Meta is working on 49 new themes that will allow users to personalize their WhatsApp Web interface more extensively.
While mobile users have long enjoyed options such as customizing chat backgrounds and colors, the desktop app has remained limited in this regard. Aside from the addition of dark mode a few years ago, customization features on WhatsApp Web have been minimal. This web client, essentially a Chromium-based wrapper, supports multiple platforms including Android tablets, enabling users to send messages, make calls, and more once linked to their WhatsApp account.
Serving as a convenient way to stay connected across devices, WhatsApp Web complements the companion mode, which permits messaging on a secondary mobile device. However, it still lacks some of the richer features found on mobile. The upcoming update will allow users to change the color of message bubbles and modify chat backgrounds or wallpapers, enhancing the visual appeal of conversations.
Users will be able to assign specific themes to individual contacts or group chats, providing a clear visual distinction for different conversations. Currently, 49 theme variations are under testing, including the default theme, which brings the total to 50 options. It is important to note that applying a theme on WhatsApp Web only affects the user’s interface on that device and does not alter the appearance for other participants in the chat.
At this time, it remains unclear whether these personalized desktop themes will synchronize with the mobile app experience, as no information has been released on this aspect. Although no official timeline for the rollout has been announced, the feature is expected to debut in a beta version before becoming widely available.
