Islamabad has launched its inaugural “Safe Muharram” mobile application, marking a significant step toward enhancing security during Muharram ul Haram observances. This initiative aims to strengthen safety protocols for religious events across the city.
In a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, authorities reviewed and approved a comprehensive set of digital surveillance and on-ground security measures to ensure peaceful and secure Muharram gatherings. The meeting highlighted the integration of advanced technology with traditional security arrangements.
Notably, all imambargahs, majalis venues, and procession routes in Islamabad have been geo-tagged as part of an extensive mapping project. This digital mapping facilitates precise monitoring and coordination. Additionally, the deployment of drone-based surveillance will provide real-time aerial monitoring of processions and congregations, enhancing situational awareness.
The newly introduced app empowers citizens to report suspicious activities or inadequate security instantly. It also allows users to share live locations and upload images, fostering community participation in maintaining safety. A central control room within the Safe City Islamabad system has been established to oversee all Muharram-related activities continuously.
Security on the ground will be reinforced through a four-tier cordon around majalis and procession routes, with stringent checks at all entry and exit points. The interior minister emphasized the importance of maintaining smooth traffic flow by implementing an effective traffic management strategy.
Furthermore, police and administrative officials have been instructed to remain actively present in the field for ongoing monitoring. Adequate food and logistical support will be provided to all deployed personnel to ensure operational efficiency. Coordination with religious scholars and event organizers has been prioritized to guarantee compliance with the agreed code of conduct during Muharram.
In a significant development, the Chief Commissioner and Inspector General of Police Islamabad briefed the interior minister on the overall security readiness and operational plans for the Muharram period, underscoring the city’s commitment to safeguarding religious observances.
