Gilgit: Raja Shahbaz Khan, the Chief Election Commissioner of Gilgit-Baltistan, pledged on Sunday to prevent any efforts aimed at disrupting the electoral process. He emphasized that comprehensive measures are underway to guarantee elections that are peaceful, transparent, and impartial throughout the region.
During a press briefing, Shahbaz Khan announced that additional election personnel have been deployed from other provinces, replicating the strategy used in the 2020 elections, to ensure the smooth execution of the upcoming polls.
He issued a stern warning that any breaches of the election code of conduct would be met with strict consequences. Notices have already been dispatched to individuals and groups found violating the established rules.
The Chief Election Commissioner reaffirmed the prohibition on federal and provincial officeholders—including governors, ministers, and government officials—from engaging in election campaigns. He highlighted that violations of election laws could lead to fines, legal action, and other penalties as prescribed by relevant legislation.
In a significant development, Shahbaz Khan cautioned against attempts to provoke regional, linguistic, or sectarian tensions during the campaign period. He urged political parties and candidates to refrain from incendiary rhetoric and to foster a peaceful political atmosphere.
Monitoring officers have been instructed to enforce the code of conduct rigorously. Those found inciting hatred or unrest will face prosecution under the Pakistan Penal Code.
Furthermore, the election commission has reissued a circular to all political parties, reminding them of their responsibilities under the code of conduct.
“Ensuring transparent, fair, and peaceful elections remains our highest priority,” Shahbaz Khan stated, appealing to political stakeholders and the public alike to collaborate in upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
