The opposition alliance comprising Tehreek Tahaffuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has firmly opposed US President Donald Trump’s demand that Muslim countries sign the Abraham Accords with Israel as a precondition for ending the conflict with Iran. On Tuesday, TTAP expressed serious concerns over this demand and called on the current government to take an immediate and transparent stance by briefing the parliament on the issue.
This statement followed Trump’s recent appeal urging Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan to collectively normalize relations with Israel through the Abraham Accords. In a detailed post on Truth Social, Trump insisted that most of these nations should be “ready, willing, and able” to join the agreement, emphasizing that if Iran agrees to a deal with him as US President, it would be an honor for Iran to be part of this unprecedented global coalition.
Originally brokered in 2020 during Trump’s first term, the Abraham Accords saw the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain formally normalize diplomatic relations with Israel. However, the opposition coalition criticized linking peace agreements with broader regional issues, labeling it a “clear Israeli agenda.” They also demanded that the parliament deliberate on this matter urgently.
TTAP argued that countries which have signed similar accords have failed to secure any tangible roadmap towards an independent Palestinian state or to halt ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza. The alliance warned that such agreements risk undermining the collective Muslim stance on Palestinian statehood, describing the proposal as an attempt to legitimize Israeli aggression and sow division within the Muslim world.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja also rejected Trump’s push for the Abraham Accords. He reaffirmed PTI’s commitment to a just resolution that guarantees an independent, sovereign Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital. Raja emphasized that any initiative diverting from this goal, including the Abraham Accords, is unacceptable.
Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman condemned the Abraham Accords as a “document of surrender.” He highlighted Trump’s previous recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and his support for Israeli actions in Gaza, accusing the US president of pressuring Muslim countries to accept an agreement that effectively legitimizes Israeli occupation.
Rehman stated that Pakistan’s people will not tolerate any coercive attempts to legalize Israel’s control over Jerusalem, reiterating that Palestine rightfully belongs to Palestinians with Jerusalem as its capital. He asserted that Israel is an illegitimate state, a stance consistent with the founding principles laid out by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, which remains the unwavering position of Pakistan.
Calling on the government, Rehman urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to publicly reject Trump’s demand, emphasizing the need for Pakistan to uphold its principled stance on the Palestinian issue.
