Musadik Malik Details Rs 127 Petrol Subsidy Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Federal Minister Musadik Malik, speaking at a press briefing in Lahore, announced that the government has introduced a subsidy of Rs 127 per litre on petrol. This move is part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to alleviate the financial pressure on ordinary citizens grappling with soaring fuel prices. Alongside petrol, the government is also providing a substantial subsidy exceeding Rs 200 per litre on diesel, highlighting its commitment to support both consumers and industries reliant on diesel fuel.

In his address, Malik emphasized that these subsidies are crucial in cushioning the impact of global oil price fluctuations on Pakistan’s economy. He pointed out that the government is acutely aware of the hardships faced by the lower-income segments of society, and these measures are designed to reduce their economic burden. However, he cautioned that sustaining such subsidies indefinitely may prove challenging if international oil prices continue their upward trajectory.

Adding to the economic concerns, the Federal Minister for Climate Change drew attention to the growing environmental risks associated with increased fuel consumption in the region. He stressed the importance of balancing economic relief with environmental responsibility. In line with this, Malik revealed that government vehicles have been temporarily grounded to conserve petroleum products, signaling a move towards more sustainable fuel usage within public sector operations.

Furthermore, the government has introduced a new levy of Rs 200 on fuel for luxury vehicles, a policy aimed at ensuring that wealthier segments contribute more towards the subsidy scheme. This step is intended to make the subsidy program more equitable and financially viable in the long run. Malik underscored that while the government is committed to protecting vulnerable populations, it must also implement measures to manage fiscal sustainability.

In conclusion, Musadik Malik warned that if the trend of rising oil prices persists, the government may face significant difficulties in maintaining unlimited subsidies. This statement reflects the delicate balance the administration must strike between providing immediate relief to citizens and managing the country’s economic resources prudently. The government’s approach indicates a strategic effort to navigate these complex challenges while prioritizing both economic stability and environmental concerns.
