Stuttgart Edges Leipzig in Crucial Bundesliga Clash to Strengthen Top-Four Bid

In a pivotal Bundesliga encounter on Sunday, Stuttgart secured a narrow but significant 1-0 victory against RB Leipzig at home, a result that could prove crucial in the fiercely contested battle for a top-four finish. The match’s only goal came courtesy of Deniz Undav, who capitalized on a rare mistake by Leipzig’s goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt to notch his 16th goal of the season. This win propels Stuttgart three points clear of Leipzig, who now find themselves under increased pressure as the season approaches its climax.

Undav’s goal not only marked a personal milestone but also helped Stuttgart draw level on points with third-placed Hoffenheim, both clubs sitting on 50 points. The striker reflected on the team’s approach after the game, emphasizing the importance of winning individual battles on the pitch. “We focused on winning our duels today. Those small victories give us confidence, especially in front of our passionate home supporters,” Undav remarked. He added that once the team secured the lead, their confidence visibly grew, allowing them to control the game more effectively.

The Bundesliga standings are becoming increasingly tight as Bayer Leverkusen, who were held to a 1-1 draw by a depleted Bayern Munich side reduced to nine men on Saturday, trail Stuttgart by five points and sit just two points behind Leipzig. This cluster of teams is fiercely contesting the remaining Champions League qualification spots, making every match in the coming weeks critical. Stuttgart, meanwhile, are also preparing for a challenging Europa League fixture against Porto on Thursday, where they aim to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg. A quarter-final appearance would mark their best run in the competition since reaching the final in 1989, adding further motivation to their current strong form.

The match itself was tightly contested, with Leipzig’s top scorer Christoph Baumgartner missing a golden opportunity in the first half when he failed to convert a one-on-one chance against Stuttgart’s goalkeeper Alexander Nuebel. The turning point came just past the hour mark when Vandevoordt’s uncharacteristic error—passing directly to Stuttgart’s Chris Fuehrich—allowed the hosts to launch a swift attack. Fuehrich’s cross found Undav, who slid in to score his fifth consecutive game goal, a testament to his current hot streak.

Despite Leipzig’s late efforts, including a header from Willi Orban that rattled the inside of the post during stoppage time, Stuttgart’s defense held firm to secure the win. The victory not only boosts Stuttgart’s standing but also raises questions about Leipzig’s ability to maintain their Champions League ambitions. Meanwhile, Undav remained non-committal when asked about a potential call-up to the German national team for the upcoming March friendlies, with the squad announcement scheduled for Thursday. Having scored three goals in six appearances for Germany, Undav has not featured since last June but appeared relaxed about his international prospects.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Union Berlin claimed a dramatic 1-0 victory at Freiburg thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Jeong Woo-yeong. The match was poised for a goalless draw, continuing a trend in recent meetings between the two sides, until Woo-yeong’s curling effort found the back of the net through a crowded penalty area. Union’s goalkeeper Matheo Raab also made a remarkable debut save late in the game, denying a last-ditch attempt from Freiburg’s Jan-Niklas Beste. This win marks Union’s first away victory of 2026 and extends their cushion to seven points above the relegation playoff zone.

Meanwhile, Mainz secured a 2-0 triumph over Werder Bremen, leapfrogging their opponents in the standings and moving three points clear of the relegation playoff spot. Bremen, a club with a rich history now facing the threat of a second relegation in six years, endured a frustrating day highlighted by a bizarre moment when defender Marco Gruell appeared distracted by a pigeon on the pitch, allowing Mainz to quickly restart play and score an early goal. Lee Jae-Sung’s second-half strike further solidified Mainz’s position and improved their chances of survival in the top flight.
