Government Prioritizes Steady Fuel Supply Amid Regional Tensions, Plans Work-from-Home Policy

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining a continuous and stable supply of petrol and diesel throughout Pakistan. Speaking on Friday during a high-level meeting in Islamabad, he reiterated that ensuring fuel availability remains a top priority for the administration, especially given the evolving geopolitical tensions in the region. The meeting was convened under the auspices of the Committee to Monitor Petrol Prices, a body established by the Prime Minister to closely oversee the energy sector amid emerging challenges.

During the session, officials presented a detailed briefing on the current status of Pakistan’s petroleum reserves, highlighting that national stock levels are comfortably sufficient to meet ongoing demand. The committee was assured that there is no immediate threat to the availability of key fuel products, including petrol and diesel, which are critical to the country’s economic activities and daily life. This reassurance comes at a time when global oil markets are experiencing volatility due to recent military actions in the Middle East, particularly following the Israel-US strikes on Iran.

The committee also engaged in a thorough review of various supply and pricing scenarios, aiming to prepare for any potential disruptions that could arise from the unstable regional situation. This proactive approach is designed to safeguard domestic energy supplies and prevent sudden price shocks that could impact consumers and industries alike. To maintain vigilance, the committee has committed to daily meetings to continuously monitor stock levels, track supply chain movements, and ensure that all stakeholders execute their responsibilities promptly and efficiently.

In a related development, the government’s committee submitted a comprehensive set of recommendations to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding the implementation of a work-from-home (WFH) policy. This initiative forms part of a broader national strategy focused on fuel conservation amid concerns over possible interruptions in oil supplies from the Middle East. The proposed plan outlines detailed measures for guaranteeing fuel supply, enforcing regulations, managing pricing mechanisms, and promoting energy-saving practices across various sectors.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who chaired the committee meeting, was briefed extensively by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb on the country’s current petroleum stock situation and consumption trends. The government is actively considering adopting the WFH policy to reduce fuel demand, thereby mitigating the impact of any supply constraints. This step reflects a strategic effort to balance economic activity with resource conservation during a period of heightened uncertainty in global energy markets.

Overall, the government’s multi-pronged approach demonstrates its resolve to shield Pakistan’s energy security from external shocks while ensuring that citizens and businesses continue to have reliable access to essential fuel supplies. The ongoing monitoring and adaptive planning underscore the administration’s readiness to respond swiftly to any changes in the regional landscape, thereby maintaining stability within the domestic energy sector.
