Seven Police Officers Suspended After Security Failures at US Consulate Protest in Karachi

In the wake of the recent violent protests outside the US Consulate in Karachi, Sindh’s Inspector General of Police, Javed Alam Odho, has taken decisive action against several police officials found responsible for serious security lapses and negligence. The move comes after a thorough investigation into the chaotic events that unfolded on Sunday, which resulted in significant physical and financial damages as well as tragic loss of life. The investigation highlighted failures in duty and mismanagement that compromised the safety of both the consulate and the public.

Following the inquiry, the Keamari police chief, SSP Amjad Shaikh, was recommended for suspension due to his inadequate handling of the situation. Alongside him, the Keamari SDPO, the Station House Officers (SHOs) of Docks, SITE-B, Karachi Port Trust (KPT), and Jackson police stations, as well as the officer in charge of the Foreign Security Cell, were also suspended. These officers were found to have neglected their responsibilities during the protests, prompting the initiation of departmental inquiries to further examine their roles and accountability.

The unrest erupted after demonstrators breached the outer security perimeter of the US Consulate in Karachi, vandalizing property and clashing with law enforcement. The protests were sparked by the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was targeted in US-Israeli strikes during the early hours of Sunday. This incident has intensified an already volatile conflict in the Middle East, triggering widespread demonstrations across Pakistan. Besides Karachi, protests also took place at the US Consulate General in Lahore and the US Embassy in Islamabad, with violence spreading to Gilgit Baltistan’s Skardu and the federal capital.

Tragically, the nationwide protests resulted in the deaths of 23 people, including 10 in Karachi alone. In the city, authorities responded by blocking all access routes to the consulate to prevent further escalation. However, the situation deteriorated as a traffic police post beneath the Sultanabad bridge was set ablaze. Police resorted to using tear gas and shelling near the Central Police Office on II Chundrigar Road to disperse crowds, while another group gathered at the Native Jetty Bridge close to the Customs House. These confrontations underscored the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing large-scale protests amid heightened tensions.

In response to the severity of the incident, a high-level committee has been established to conduct a transparent and comprehensive investigation. This six-member panel, led by the chief of the Counter Terrorism Department, has been tasked with submitting a detailed report within seven days. The committee’s mandate includes identifying the root causes of the security breakdown and recommending measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere at the Central Police Office remained tense on Monday evening as a crucial meeting was held under the chairmanship of Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar. Senior police officials, including IGP Odho, convened to review the events and assess the failures that led to the security breach. During the meeting, the Inspector General provided a detailed briefing on the sequence of events, highlighting critical gaps in coordination and response efforts.

Home Minister Lanjar expressed his strong disapproval of the security failure, describing it as both serious and unacceptable. He emphasized that accountability would be enforced swiftly and without delay. The minister reminded attendees that both he and the Sindh Chief Minister had already ordered the removal of certain officers implicated in the incident, and warned that further dismissals could follow pending the ongoing inquiry. He directed the Counter Terrorism Department to expedite its review and deliver findings promptly.

Reaffirming his confidence in the professionalism of the Sindh police force, the home minister stressed the importance of strict adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), especially given the current security environment. He warned that any future negligence resulting in accidents or incidents would lead to direct disciplinary action against responsible field officers. While acknowledging the lapse, Lanjar also praised acts of bravery displayed by some personnel during the crisis, notably commending DIG West Irfan Baloch for his steadfastness under pressure.

Following the meeting, operational directives were issued to enhance security measures across Karachi. The Special Security Unit has been tasked with taking the lead in these efforts, supported by the Rapid Response Force, which is to remain fully mobilized and deployed strictly approved SOPs. The K-9 unit has been activated to assist in maintaining order, and recommendations for additional resources are expected soon. Security at sensitive and strategic locations throughout the city will be further reinforced, with SSPs required to maintain a visible presence in both operational and traffic management roles.

Concluding the meeting, the home minister issued a clear warning that failure to comply with these directives and maintain high standards of security would result in stringent disciplinary measures. This decisive response reflects the government’s commitment to restoring order and preventing any recurrence of such dangerous lapses in the future.
