Anthropic has discreetly established a laboratory dedicated to physical biology experiments as it expands its artificial intelligence initiatives into drug discovery. The startup’s new wet lab, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, marks a significant step beyond purely computational evaluations, aiming to unlock treatments for rare diseases.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, confirmed the existence of the wet lab, emphasizing that real-world lab work remains essential for biological research. He described their approach as similar to that of typical biotech firms, combining in-house experiments with collaborations involving external partners. However, a company spokesperson clarified that the lab is not specifically focused on drug discovery and declined to provide further details.
This development aligns with Anthropic’s broader ambition to address diseases often overlooked by the pharmaceutical industry. It also reflects a strategic effort to maintain confidence in AI’s value amid public concerns about job displacement and ethical risks. Despite these aspirations, the success of any drug program remains uncertain, as most candidates fail clinical trials for safety and efficacy.
For CEO Dario Amodei, the mission is deeply personal, having lost his father to a disease shortly before a cure was found. Kauderer-Abrams echoed this sentiment, stating that the company’s goal is to develop powerful AI technologies that benefit humanity, with life sciences representing the most promising area for impact.
Anthropic is also integrating physical automation into its lab processes. The company aims to use its Claude AI to direct robotic systems in conducting experiments with minimal human intervention, while maintaining necessary oversight to ensure safety. Kauderer-Abrams described this as an early but potentially transformative phase in accelerating scientific workflows.
This push into biology coincides with a turbulent period for Anthropic. Recently, some researchers voiced concerns about AI’s existential risks, and the company acknowledged instances where its technology could be misused for biological weapons development, sparking debate. Meanwhile, Amodei has advocated for slowing AI progress to prevent catastrophic outcomes, even as Anthropic prepares for a possible $2 trillion IPO to fund further AI advancements.

Anthropic publicly announced its intention to pursue drug programs at a San Francisco event in June. Kauderer-Abrams highlighted plans to focus on preclinical research in areas neglected by traditional companies due to financial constraints. The company also launched Claude Science software and expanded its expertise by adding Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board and acquiring Coefficient Bio for approximately $400 million in stock, a move confirmed by Anthropic without comment on the price.
To enhance speed and gain direct biological insights, Anthropic is increasing its in-house lab capabilities, although it continues to outsource certain tasks when efficient. Kauderer-Abrams noted that some processes are faster when handled internally, aiming to scale operations extensively.
The company is actively recruiting leadership to boost procurement and operational functions, as well as specialists in protein and nucleic acid characterization. Job postings emphasize the goal of accelerating progress in life sciences by an order of magnitude. Life sciences already represent one of Anthropic’s largest investment areas in terms of personnel and resources.
Kauderer-Abrams believes AI can expedite the development of treatments for previously “undruggable” conditions, such as by discovering bispecific and trispecific antibodies that target multiple sites on proteins or cells. However, the specific diseases Anthropic targets and its progress remain undisclosed. The lengthy process of bringing a drug to market, including clinical trials, remains a challenge the company has not yet undertaken. For comparison, Alphabet’s Isomorphic Labs has been working toward clinical applications but has delayed this goal until 2026.
In its automation efforts, Anthropic introduced the Model Hardware Standard in August to facilitate AI control of laboratory equipment. This complements other academic initiatives like PyLabRobot, which addresses related automation needs.
Anthropic provides AI tools and services to leading pharmaceutical firms such as Roche’s Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Novo Nordisk. However, the company faces a trust challenge, as clients may worry about data privacy and competition despite Anthropic’s efforts to segregate proprietary information.
Kauderer-Abrams stressed that Anthropic is not competing with pharmaceutical companies in clinical drug development but is focusing on unmet needs that traditional industry players overlook.
