Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb emphasized that the government is implementing comprehensive reforms aimed at stabilizing Pakistan’s economy and steering it towards sustainable growth. He made these remarks while addressing a Pakistan Investment Roundtable, which brought together leading investors and representatives from international financial institutions.
Speaking as the chief guest, Aurangzeb highlighted that reforms are being introduced across multiple sectors to enhance private sector opportunities and attract greater investment. He pointed out that the government’s fiscal policies are beginning to yield positive outcomes, including a reduction in the budget deficit, increased government revenues, and progress in financial and institutional reforms.
In a significant development, the finance minister noted that the government is advancing reforms and the privatization of state-owned enterprises. He also mentioned ongoing changes in the energy sector, improvements in fiscal transparency, and initiatives to simplify doing business, all of which are expected to further strengthen the economy.
Aurangzeb underscored the importance of expanding the tax base and ensuring strict enforcement of tax laws to support economic growth. He revealed that discretionary powers previously held by tax authorities have been eliminated, ensuring no preferential treatment in tax matters. Additionally, he confirmed that no new taxes have been imposed on salaried individuals.
The minister acknowledged the economic challenges Pakistan has faced, including the severe floods last year and the recent Middle East conflict, which have also impacted global oil prices. Despite these obstacles, Aurangzeb expressed confidence in Pakistan’s significant business and investment potential, noting a resurgence of international investor interest.
He further highlighted that Pakistan has successfully completed all scheduled reviews under its International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, with the country’s credit rating having been upgraded three times. The roundtable also included discussions on Pakistan’s economic outlook, investment climate, and sector-specific opportunities. Participants exchanged views on collaboration with international financial institutions and explored new avenues for investment in the country.
