Punjab has initiated the use of body-worn cameras for police officers throughout the province, integrating these devices with the Safe City system operational in 43 cities. This move aims to enhance supervision and reduce corruption within law enforcement.

The implementation follows directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, with police personnel having completed training on the new technology. Officers from the Punjab Police, Highway Patrol, Dolphin Force, and traffic police will wear these cameras while on duty.

Installation of docking stations for the cameras has commenced at police stations across Punjab. After their shifts, officers will place the cameras in these docking points, where recorded footage will be automatically uploaded and securely stored.

The system enables live monitoring of the body-worn cameras via district Safe City control rooms. These devices come equipped with advanced features such as digital facial recognition and automated reading of motorcycle and vehicle license plates.

In urgent situations, police can instantly communicate with control rooms using threat alerts, calling functions, and push-to-talk capabilities. This technology is expected to strengthen oversight of police activities and maintain a digital record of interactions during duty hours.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the project will not only enhance monitoring but also serve as a deterrent against corruption. She highlighted the importance of fostering a sense of security among the public, especially vulnerable groups, as a key measure of success.

This initiative is part of Punjab’s broader strategy to expand technology-driven policing and surveillance through its Safe City infrastructure, aiming to modernize law enforcement and improve public trust.
