In a significant development, the federal cabinet convened under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Thursday to approve critical legislative drafts concerning Pakistan’s defense framework. Among the key decisions was the endorsement of the draft Defence Forces Act 2026, which has been formulated as a continuation of the changes introduced by the 27th Constitutional Amendment. This draft legislation is designed to clarify and regulate administrative issues related to the position of Chief of Defence Forces and the operational structure of the Chief of Defence Forces Headquarters.

The approval of this draft marks a crucial step in modernizing the legal framework governing Pakistan’s military leadership, ensuring that the roles and responsibilities within the defense hierarchy are clearly defined. Following this cabinet approval, the draft Defence Forces Act 2026 is set to be presented to the Parliament during its ongoing session, where it will undergo further scrutiny and debate before being enacted into law.

Meanwhile, the cabinet also sanctioned amendments to the National Command Authority Act of 2010. These changes have become necessary in light of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, reflecting the evolving governance and command structures within the country’s strategic defense apparatus. The revised draft of the National Command Authority Act will similarly be submitted to Parliament for consideration and approval, reinforcing the legal underpinnings of Pakistan’s national command and control mechanisms.

These legislative updates underscore the government’s commitment to strengthening the institutional framework of Pakistan’s defense forces, aligning statutory provisions with constitutional reforms. As these drafts move forward in the parliamentary process, they are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future operational and administrative landscape of the country’s military leadership.
