Bodies of Renowned Climbers Recovered at Broad Peak Base Camp

A search team has successfully transported the bodies of famed climber Nirmal Purja and three of his teammates to the base camp of Broad Peak, where they tragically lost their lives in an avalanche. The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed the recovery operation on Wednesday.

The avalanche struck on July 30, severing communication with the 10-member international expedition led by 43-year-old British-Nepali climber Purja. Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains, proved deadly for the team. Purja’s company confirmed that no survivors were found.

In a significant development, the Alpine Club of Pakistan announced that after a highly challenging and technically complex recovery mission, the bodies of Nirmal Purja, Zhong Wang, Nima Sherpa, and Kilu Sherpa have been brought safely to Base Camp. The group included a Chinese mountaineer and two Nepali climbers.

Meanwhile, three climbers from the expedition remain missing. The club emphasized its ongoing commitment to supporting all efforts to locate and recover these individuals as conditions permit, aiming to bring them home to their families.

Earlier, the remains of three other team members—an American woman, an Omani woman, and a Nepali man—were evacuated from the mountain and flown to Skardu, a city in northern Pakistan. However, the bodies of two Nepali nationals and one Pakistani citizen have yet to be recovered.

The mountaineering community has been deeply affected by the tragedy. Tul Singh Gurung, President of Nepal’s National Mountain Guide Association, expressed profound sorrow, stating that the community has lost a generation of highly skilled mountaineers.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that the recovered bodies will be returned to their families, hoping this brings some solace and allows loved ones to mourn with dignity.

Broad Peak, located in the Karakoram range of northern Pakistan, is the world’s 12th highest mountain. Known for its extreme difficulty and technical challenges, it was first successfully climbed in 1957 by an Austrian team.
