Bournemouth have enhanced their defensive lineup by securing the services of Portugal international Antonio Silva from Benfica. The 22-year-old centre-back, a UEFA Nations League winner, joins the English club ahead of the upcoming Premier League season in a deal valued at approximately £26 million ($35 million).
Silva is set to replace Marcos Senesi, who recently transferred to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. Despite his youth, Silva brings considerable European experience, having made 235 appearances for Benfica across all competitions. He played a pivotal role in Benfica’s Primeira Liga title victory during the 2022-23 season and earned the accolade of Defender of the Year in the league.
In a significant development, Silva was also a member of the Portugal squad that secured the UEFA Nations League trophy last year, further establishing his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising defensive talents. Bournemouth’s president of football operations, Tiago Pinto, highlighted Silva’s impressive experience at a major European club despite his young age.
Following a historic season where Bournemouth qualified for the Europa League for the first time, the club is preparing to kick off their Premier League campaign against reigning champions Manchester City on August 23.
