New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently garnered widespread admiration on social media after revealing Pakistani rapper Shamoon Ismail as his favourite singer. The moment, which gained significant attention on Instagram, occurred during an interview where Mamdani shared his genuine appreciation for music, mentioning that he has been listening to Shamoon Ismail for several years and continues to enjoy his songs regularly.

This revelation sparked a wave of positive reactions online, with many users applauding Mamdani for endorsing a Pakistani artist. Comments praised his choice as both “elite” and “unexpected,” while others celebrated his recognition of Pakistani music and culture. Fans expressed pride that Shamoon Ismail’s work has reached an influential international political figure, further boosting the artist’s global profile.

The interview clip quickly went viral, being shared widely by audiences in Pakistan and beyond, who welcomed the acknowledgment of Shamoon Ismail’s talent on such a prominent platform.

Shamoon Ismail, born in September 1999 and raised in Islamabad within a Punjabi Muslim family, has cultivated a passion for music from a young age. Now 34 years old, he is skilled in multiple instruments, favoring the guitar and bass, while also enjoying playing the drums.

He launched his music career independently by releasing tracks on platforms like Bandcamp and SoundCloud, gradually building a devoted fan base. Shamoon has become a notable figure in Pakistan’s live music scene, performing at university events and major festivals such as Music Mela and Lahore Music Meet.

His debut single, “Sapne,” was released in 2013, and his first music video, “Tuntuna,” gained popularity across Pakistan and India. This helped establish his unique style, which blends hip-hop, indie, and alternative music genres.

Throughout his career, Shamoon has collaborated with several prominent artists, including Talha Anjum, Talhah Yunus, Young Stunners, Asim Azhar, Talal Qureshi, Abdullah Qureshi, Haider Mustehsan, Annural Khalid, Raamis, Mooroo, and Ghauri. Notably, in 2018, he attracted media attention when Pakistani singer Bilal Khan faced accusations of plagiarizing Shamoon’s song “Taare,” highlighting Shamoon’s growing influence in Pakistan’s independent music industry.
