State Bank of Pakistan Holds Interest Rate Steady at 11.5%

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced on Monday that it will keep the key policy interest rate steady at 11.5%. This decision was reached by the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee, which chose to maintain the benchmark rate in light of the current economic environment.

In a significant development, the SBP signaled that it will continue with its existing monetary policy stance as it closely monitors inflation trends, economic growth, and other critical macroeconomic indicators. The decision reflects the central bank’s cautious approach to balancing inflation control with supporting economic activity.

Notably, the Monetary Policy Committee had previously increased the benchmark rate to 11.5% in April. That move was a response to rising inflationary pressures, surging global oil prices, concerns over the exchange rate, and increasing strain on Pakistan’s external account. The April hike marked a shift towards a tighter monetary policy aimed at curbing inflation and maintaining macroeconomic stability.

Meanwhile, the SBP’s latest announcement to hold the rate steady suggests that the central bank is adopting a wait-and-see approach, assessing the impact of previous measures while remaining vigilant about external and domestic economic challenges. This cautious stance underscores the complexities facing Pakistan’s economy as it navigates inflationary pressures and external vulnerabilities.
