Pakistani mountaineer and trail runner Anum Uzair has achieved a significant milestone by winning the country’s first-ever 100-kilometre Galiyat Mountain Trail Ultra Marathon, a highly demanding and grueling competition. The race challenges participants with tough mountainous terrain, dense forests, and the constant threat of wildlife encounters.
Despite these formidable obstacles, Anum completed the ultra-marathon with unwavering determination, showcasing exceptional resilience and endurance. In a notable statement, she dedicated her victory to the women of Pakistan, especially female runners, and expressed her commitment to representing Pakistan internationally by taking on more unique and difficult challenges in the future.
Reflecting on the race, Anum acknowledged the dangers involved, stating that she was fully aware of the risks. She likened the experience to mountaineering, mentioning the threat of lightning and snowstorm-like conditions. Wildlife posed an additional concern throughout the event. She recounted a striking moment during her training when she encountered a leopard about 200 feet ahead on the trail, an experience that helped her conquer her fears and become fearless over time.
Once she overcame her fears, Anum focused solely on her goal, which ultimately led to her success. She also highlighted the distinct nature of mountaineering compared to trail running, emphasizing that each discipline presents different challenges and dangers. Trail running events, she noted, require less time commitment, making it easier for her to balance her passion with her responsibilities as a mother, as these events typically last around three days.
Additionally, Anum stressed the importance of maintaining fitness throughout the year. She shared that she works out daily and considers fitness essential for everyone, whether competing or not. Her routine includes climbing stairs equivalent to 100 floors to stay in peak condition, ensuring she is always prepared for any challenge she undertakes.
