Swift Dewatering Measures Keep Punjab Largely Unaffected by Monsoon Rains

The recent monsoon rainfall across Punjab passed with minimal disruption, thanks to the provincial government’s prompt and efficient dewatering operations. Authorities highlighted that the latest rain was anticipated throughout the region, but the advanced dewatering infrastructure has effectively mitigated potential damage.

This system is part of a broader provincial development initiative backed by an allocation of Rs500 billion. So far, only 25 percent of the project has been completed, while the remaining 75 percent remains in progress. The program targets 67 major cities across Punjab, with the newly installed system capable of rapidly removing up to 250mm of rainwater.

Launched in 2025, the initiative also includes the installation of underground water tanks equipped with a reverse wheel mechanism to store excess water. Previously, monsoon spells often inflicted significant damage on the province’s critical infrastructure; however, such impacts have been largely prevented due to continuous government oversight.

In addition, a comprehensive monsoon monitoring system has been established. Senior management officials have been assigned responsibility for monitoring key zones in at least 41 cities, enhancing the ability to forecast weather developments and respond proactively.
