Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Unveils Pakistan’s First-Ever Electric Taxi Initiative

In a landmark move towards sustainable urban transport, Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, officially inaugurated Pakistan’s very first E-Taxi Scheme in Lahore. The event marked a significant milestone in the province’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly transportation options while empowering local drivers. During the ceremony, the chief minister personally handed over keys to selected beneficiaries, including both men and women, symbolizing the government’s commitment to inclusive growth.

Maryam Nawaz took a close look at the electric vehicles provided under the initiative, engaging with the recipients and asking detailed questions about the technical specifications and operational features of the cars. This hands-on approach highlighted the government’s dedication to ensuring that the vehicles meet the needs of drivers and passengers alike. Among the first beneficiaries to receive keys were Naila Farhan, Kiran Khurshid, Qurat-ul-Ain, Abid Ali, and Azmat Mehmood, who were invited on stage to share their excitement and aspirations.

The atmosphere was further enlivened as women beneficiaries gathered around the chief minister, exchanging views and discussing their experiences. Maryam Nawaz attentively listened to their concerns, emphasizing the importance of female participation in this traditionally male-dominated sector. A touching moment occurred when a young girl named Asma Mehmood presented the chief minister with a hand-drawn portrait, receiving an autograph in return, symbolizing the scheme’s inspiration for the younger generation.

The initial phase of the E-Taxi Scheme involves the distribution of 1,100 electric vehicles, a substantial step towards reducing carbon emissions and modernizing public transport in Punjab. The provincial government is generously subsidizing the purchase by covering 50 percent of the down payment and the associated markup costs. Notably, female drivers receive even greater support, with the government covering 60 percent of their down payment, reflecting a strong emphasis on gender inclusivity. To further encourage women’s participation, 30 percent of the total vehicles are reserved for female drivers, and these vehicles are easily identifiable by their distinct color scheme.

Beyond financial assistance, the government is also taking care of ancillary expenses such as vehicle registration, fitness certification, and token tax, easing the burden on drivers. The payment structure is designed to be affordable, allowing beneficiaries to repay the cost in manageable installments spread over five years. This approach aims to make electric taxis accessible to a wide range of drivers, fostering economic empowerment and environmental responsibility simultaneously.

Safety measures have been prioritized as well, with each e-taxi equipped with a panic button connected directly to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, ensuring rapid response in emergencies. To integrate these vehicles into the modern ride-hailing ecosystem, the e-taxis are being registered with popular platforms like inDrive and Yango, offering drivers access to a broad customer base. Infrastructure development is also underway, with fast-charging stations being installed at strategic locations to support the smooth operation of the electric fleet.

The vehicles themselves come outfitted with advanced features such as onboard cameras, Wi-Fi connectivity, and charging ports for passengers’ convenience. Digital payment options are also integrated, aligning with the growing trend towards cashless transactions and enhancing the overall user experience. This comprehensive approach reflects the government’s vision of creating a modern, efficient, and inclusive urban transport system that benefits drivers, passengers, and the environment alike.
