UK Launches Digital E-Visa System to Simplify Travel for Pakistani Visitors

In a significant move aimed at modernizing and simplifying the visa application process, the United Kingdom has unveiled a new electronic visa (e-visa) system specifically for Pakistani nationals. This new initiative allows tourists, business visitors, and those visiting family in the UK to receive their visa approvals digitally via email, replacing the traditional physical visa stickers that were previously affixed to passports. The British High Commission in Islamabad made this announcement on Wednesday, highlighting the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance travel convenience.

Under the updated procedure, applicants will continue to submit their visa applications through the official online portal and visit designated visa application centers to provide biometric data such as fingerprints and photographs. However, once the biometric process is completed, successful applicants will no longer need to return to the center to collect their passports. Instead, they can retain their passports immediately after the biometric session, while their visa status will be digitally recorded and accessible through their personal UK Visas and Immigration online accounts. This shift not only saves time but also reduces the hassle of multiple visits to visa centers.

The introduction of e-visas is expected to enhance security measures related to immigration documentation. Digital records minimize the risk of losing or damaging physical visa stickers, which have traditionally been vulnerable to wear and tear or misplacement. Additionally, the system allows applicants to generate a unique share code that can be used to verify their visa status at UK border controls and other checkpoints, streamlining the verification process. Importantly, the new system does not alter visa processing times, eligibility requirements, or the conditions attached to the visas, ensuring continuity and fairness in the application process.

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott expressed enthusiasm about the rollout of the e-visa system, describing it as a “hugely exciting step” for Pakistani travellers. She emphasized that the new system removes a significant barrier in the application journey by eliminating the need to collect physical visas from application centers. Marriott also pointed out that the share code mechanism simplifies the demonstration of visa status, making it more convenient for visitors arriving in the UK for tourism, business, or family visits.

This digital transformation follows the successful implementation of e-visas for students and work visa holders last year, which has already been embraced by thousands of travellers globally at UK airports. Despite the introduction of e-visas, the existing physical sticker visas remain valid and unaffected by these changes, ensuring a smooth transition for all visa holders. The move reflects the UK government’s broader strategy to digitize immigration services and improve the overall experience for international visitors.
