Supreme Court Petition Seeks Transfer of Imran Khan to Shifa Hospital for Eye Treatment

A formal petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan requesting the transfer of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital. The legal plea emphasizes the urgent need for specialized medical treatment, particularly for an eye condition that requires expert attention. This petition was filed by Khan’s legal representatives, including prominent lawyers Latif Khosa, Shehbaz Khosa, and Hamza Sattar, who are advocating for his immediate transfer to ensure proper healthcare.

The petition highlights the necessity of a comprehensive medical examination by eye specialists at Shifa Hospital, a facility known for its advanced ophthalmological services. It stresses that Imran Khan should be allowed to undergo a thorough eye check-up under the supervision of his personal doctors, Dr Faisal Sultan and Dr Asim Yousaf, who have been closely monitoring his health. The legal team has requested the court to grant access to these physicians so they can oversee his treatment and provide the necessary care tailored to his condition.

This development follows Khan’s recent transfer to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a follow-up examination related to his eye ailment. At PIMS, he received a second dose of an anti-VEGF intravitreal injection, a treatment aimed at combating vision loss caused by retinal issues. The procedure was conducted under the watchful eyes of consultant ophthalmologists and a vitreoretinal surgeon from both PIMS and Shifa Eye Hospital, ensuring a high standard of care. It was performed as a day-care surgery, allowing Khan to be discharged the same day with detailed follow-up instructions and prescribed medication.

In addition to the eye treatment, a consultant cardiologist at PIMS conducted echocardiography and an electrocardiogram (ECG) to assess Khan’s cardiac health. Both tests returned normal results, providing some reassurance regarding his overall medical condition. Prior to the procedure, a board of specialists thoroughly examined him, reflecting the seriousness with which his health concerns are being addressed despite his incarceration.

The petition underscores the critical importance of continuing specialized medical care outside the prison environment, citing the limitations of healthcare facilities within the jail. It appeals to the Supreme Court to consider the humanitarian aspect of Khan’s situation, ensuring that his right to adequate medical treatment is upheld. This legal move comes amid growing concerns about the health and wellbeing of high-profile detainees in Pakistan’s prison system, where access to advanced medical care can be restricted.

As the Supreme Court reviews the petition, the nation watches closely, recognizing the broader implications this case holds for the treatment of prisoners requiring urgent medical attention. The court’s decision will not only impact Imran Khan’s health management but could also set a precedent for how medical care is administered to other incarcerated individuals facing serious health challenges.
