Pakistan Strikes Back After Unprovoked Afghan Taliban Firing at Torkham and Tirah Borders

In a significant development along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier, Pakistani security forces launched an immediate and forceful response to unprovoked firing initiated by the Afghan Taliban regime in the Torkham and Tirah border sectors. The incident, which involved intense exchanges of gunfire at multiple points, lasted for nearly an hour, underscoring the volatility of this strategically sensitive region.

official statements, the clashes erupted simultaneously at three distinct locations along the border, highlighting the coordinated nature of the aggression by Taliban forces. Pakistani troops, maintaining high alert, responded swiftly and decisively to neutralize the threat. During the counteraction, a Taliban checkpost was targeted and completely destroyed, marking a clear message of deterrence from Islamabad. Fortunately, all Pakistani soldiers involved in the operation remained unharmed, reflecting the preparedness and resilience of the security personnel deployed in this challenging terrain.

Expanding on the government’s stance, Musharraf Zaidi, the spokesperson for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on foreign media matters, emphasized that Pakistan will not tolerate any further provocations from across the border. He reiterated that any future hostile actions would be met with an immediate and robust response. Zaidi’s remarks, shared on the social media platform X, reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its citizens and defending the integrity of its borders against any form of aggression.

This recent flare-up is part of a broader pattern of escalating tensions between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban, which intensified sharply in October 2025. At that time, fierce clashes erupted following a series of unprovoked attacks on Pakistani frontier posts by Taliban fighters and their allied militant groups. The confrontations resulted in significant casualties, with Pakistani officials reporting the deaths of 23 soldiers and over 200 Taliban militants and affiliates. These figures highlight the deadly nature of the ongoing conflict and the high stakes involved for both sides.

Pakistan’s military operations along the border have been driven by a surge in militant attacks within its own territory, particularly in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. These attacks have claimed numerous lives among civilians and security forces alike, prompting Islamabad to intensify its efforts to eliminate militant sanctuaries believed to be operating from Afghan soil. Despite repeated appeals to the Afghan Taliban authorities to clamp down on these groups, Pakistani officials assert that Kabul has failed to take meaningful action, exacerbating the security challenges faced by Pakistan.

In response, Pakistan has conducted a series of precision strikes targeting suspected militant hideouts inside Afghanistan, including locations in Kandahar province and Kabul. These operations aim to disrupt the planning and execution of cross-border attacks. While diplomatic channels between the two sides have remained open, multiple rounds of talks aimed at securing a ceasefire have not yielded lasting results. Islamabad continues to hold the Afghan Taliban administration responsible for not decisively addressing the threat posed by armed factions operating from their territory.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, cross-border militancy has reportedly intensified, particularly affecting the border provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. These areas, characterized by rugged terrain and porous frontiers, have become hotspots for militant activity, complicating Pakistan’s internal security landscape. A recent attack on February 17 in Bajaur district, which resulted in the deaths of 11 security personnel, further underscores the persistent threat. Pakistani forces responded by eliminating 12 militants during subsequent operations, demonstrating their resolve to maintain law and order.

As tensions continue to simmer along this historically contentious border, Pakistan remains vigilant and prepared to defend its sovereignty. The latest exchange of fire serves as a stark reminder of the fragile security situation and the urgent need for sustained dialogue and cooperation to prevent further escalation. Meanwhile, Islamabad’s firm stance signals that it will continue to take all necessary measures to protect its people and uphold its territorial integrity against any external threats.
