Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Owais Ahmad Khan Leghari stated that Pakistan and Russia’s bilateral relations are progressing towards “new dimensions” amid a swiftly changing global environment. This development highlights increasing alignment in areas such as regional connectivity, trade, and multilateral cooperation.
Speaking at a webinar titled “Pakistan and Russia Relations in the Context of a Changing Global Order,” the minister emphasized that two decades of positive engagement have built mutual trust and transformed the nature of their partnership. He observed that relations have evolved from limited interaction to a more stable and dependable alliance, bolstered by continuous high-level political exchanges, including meetings between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Leghari pointed out that cooperation is expanding across various sectors, including trade, energy, industry, education, and science. Both nations share a vision for a more balanced and multipolar international order, reflecting their common interests.
Highlighting economic and strategic collaboration, the minister noted ongoing efforts to deepen economic ties by removing trade barriers and improving payment systems to facilitate bilateral commerce. Discussions are underway for a long-term economic cooperation program extending to 2030, signaling the institutionalization of their relationship.
Connectivity enhancement is also a priority, with Pakistan expressing interest in joining the International North-South Transport Corridor and linking Gwadar Port to this initiative. Such projects are expected to play a crucial role in boosting regional integration and economic exchanges across Eurasia.
Leghari further remarked that both countries advocate for inclusive international cooperation and a stronger voice for the Global South in global affairs. Pakistan remains committed to a foreign policy grounded in mutual respect, sovereign equality, and peaceful dispute resolution.
He also highlighted Pakistan’s active diplomatic engagement through participation in economic and international forums in Russia, demonstrating the depth of bilateral relations. Strengthened ties between Islamabad and Moscow are seen as contributing not only to regional stability but also to the establishment of a more balanced global order. Sustained dialogue will be essential to future cooperation between the two nations.
