Spain Reports Second Hantavirus Case Among Quarantined Cruise Passengers

Spain’s Health Ministry announced on Monday the detection of a new hantavirus infection in a Spanish national who was among those quarantined after evacuation from the cruise ship MV Hondius earlier this month. This marks the second confirmed case among the 14 Spanish nationals brought to Tenerife for quarantine following the outbreak.

The MV Hondius, a luxury cruise liner carrying approximately 150 passengers and crew from 23 different countries, became the center of concern after a cluster of severe respiratory illnesses was reported to the World Health Organization on May 2. The initial cases prompted swift action by health authorities to contain the potential spread of the virus.

In a significant development, the newly infected patient was promptly transferred to an isolation unit at Madrid’s Gómez Ulla military hospital to receive specialized care. Spanish health officials emphasized that this case was identified within the group already under quarantine, reinforcing that the situation does not pose an increased risk to the wider public.

Authorities continue to monitor all individuals evacuated from the cruise ship closely, maintaining strict quarantine protocols to prevent further transmission. The Health Ministry reassured the public that ongoing measures are effective in managing the situation and that there is no cause for alarm beyond the affected group.
