Hotels Combat ‘Dawn Dash’ for Sunbeds with New Allocation Rules

In response to the ongoing issue of guests reserving sunbeds early in the morning by placing towels, some hotels have implemented strict allocation policies starting from check-in. This move aims to prevent the so-called ‘dawn dash’ phenomenon, where guests rush at first light to claim loungers, often leading to disputes and dissatisfaction among holidaymakers. The problem has become widespread in popular resorts, prompting management to take decisive action to ensure fair access to sunbeds for all visitors.

Notably, the introduction of these rules follows a significant legal case in which a man received a payout after being denied access to sunbeds due to early reservations by others. This development has underscored the need for resorts to regulate sunbed usage more effectively, balancing guest convenience with fairness. By enforcing allocation from the moment of check-in, hotels hope to eliminate the competitive scramble and enhance the overall guest experience.

Meanwhile, the new policies are expected to impact how tourists plan their beach or poolside relaxation, potentially reducing conflicts and improving satisfaction. The ‘sunbed wars’ have long been a source of tension in holiday destinations, and these measures represent a proactive step towards resolving the issue. As resorts adopt these changes, the hospitality industry may see a shift in guest behavior and expectations regarding shared amenities.
