ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for an expedited transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and the establishment of strategic oil reserves as part of Pakistan’s efforts to bolster energy security in response to shifting regional dynamics.

During a high-level meeting focused on energy security, the prime minister highlighted that energy concerns have become a fundamental aspect of the country’s long-term planning. He noted that proactive measures and conservation efforts have so far prevented an energy crisis.

Sharif instructed authorities to prioritize the gradual shift of the transport sector towards environmentally friendly electric vehicles. He emphasized that future government vehicle procurements should be limited to electric buses and motorcycles only.

In a significant development, the prime minister also urged the rapid expansion of EV charging infrastructure. He directed officials to develop a comprehensive policy framework to support the procurement of batteries for storing surplus solar energy, stressing the importance of promoting local manufacturing of high-quality energy storage batteries.

Officials informed the meeting that Pakistan currently maintains sufficient petroleum reserves. The National Coordination and Management Council (NCMC) continues to monitor the energy situation daily, especially considering regional developments.

Further updates revealed that domestic oil and gas production is on the rise due to ongoing efforts by energy companies. Additionally, two pilot projects for grid-level battery storage are underway, and households generating solar power are being encouraged to install battery storage systems.

Sharif also remarked that Pakistan’s food security remains stable. He reiterated that energy conservation and sustainable development will continue to be central priorities in the government’s future strategy.

The meeting was attended by several federal ministers, advisers, and senior officials, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing energy challenges comprehensively.
