Punjab Government Proposes Authority to Boost Film Industry Growth

The Punjab government has taken a significant step towards revitalizing the film industry by proposing the establishment of a dedicated authority. This initiative aims to enhance production, attract investment, and improve infrastructure within the sector.

On Tuesday, the Punjab Assembly received the draft legislation titled the Punjab Film City Authority Act 2025. The bill has been forwarded to a relevant committee for detailed examination, with a report expected within two months.

The proposed authority will focus on supporting film production, television dramas, and documentaries, backed by financial resources allocated by the provincial government. It will also receive targeted funding to foster the development and expansion of the film industry across Punjab.

The legislation outlines the creation of a comprehensive film policy that includes new regulations, licensing procedures, and a streamlined “one-window” system to simplify the process of obtaining permits and approvals for filmmakers.

In a notable move, the government plans to introduce incentives designed to attract both domestic and international investors. This will facilitate the establishment of film studios, a dedicated film city, and post-production facilities throughout the province.

Additionally, the bill proposes launching training programs to nurture emerging talent, alongside a framework for funding, grants, and subsidies aimed at supporting industry growth.

The authority will also be responsible for promoting Punjab’s cultural heritage, tourism, and positive image through cinematic projects. It will address grievances and challenges faced by industry stakeholders to ensure a supportive environment.

After the committee completes its review, the bill will return to the Punjab Assembly for final approval. Should it pass, the provincial governor will grant formal assent, officially enacting the legislation.
