Karachi BRT Red Line Construction Faces Renewed Delays Amid Disputes

Work on Karachi’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line has once more slowed dramatically, with extensive sections remaining inactive and minimal progress visible on the ground. This slowdown has reignited concerns regarding project management and governance.

The project is divided into two main segments: Lot 1, running from Airport Signal to Mosamiyat, and Lot 2, extending from Mosamiyat to Numaish. Notably, Lot 2 is larger and has been beset by more persistent and serious challenges. Last year, construction on this segment was halted for several months due to financial disagreements between the contractor and authorities, which escalated to court involvement before payments were finally released.

Although officials have stated that these issues were resolved, the pace of work has once again declined sharply. At People’s Chowrangi, the absence of construction machinery highlights the inactivity at the site. Further along the route towards Hassan Square, only a few laborers and about three machines are present, but no active construction is underway.

Between Hassan Square and Nipa, work has been suspended due to the installation of the K-IV water pipeline, adding further delays to an already troubled project. Even where machinery is present, none is operational, with no operators or ongoing construction activities visible.

The repeated interruptions and inconsistent progress on this significant urban transport project have raised serious questions about administrative efficiency and oversight. Meanwhile, Karachi’s residents continue to suffer from disrupted routes, increased traffic congestion, and ongoing uncertainty regarding the project’s completion timeline.
