US Plans Withdrawal of 5,000 Troops from Germany Amid Strategic Shift

The United States has announced its intention to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, signaling a notable change in its military strategy in Europe. This decision follows heightened tensions between President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and reflects broader apprehensions in Washington regarding European allies’ contributions to US-led initiatives, particularly concerning Iran and regional defense responsibilities.

As of December 2025, official figures indicate that approximately 68,000 active-duty US troops were permanently stationed throughout Europe, excluding rotational forces deployed for training or operational missions. The US maintains a presence across 31 permanent bases and has access to an additional 19 military sites within the region.

US military operations in Europe are coordinated by the US European Command, which works closely with NATO partners through various branches, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Special Operations Forces.

US forces are distributed across more than a dozen European nations, with the largest contingents in Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Germany hosts the most significant US military hub, centered around Ramstein Air Base, where roughly 36,436 troops are stationed across multiple garrisons.

Italy accommodates about 12,662 US personnel, with major installations located in Vicenza, Aviano, Naples, and Sicily. The United Kingdom hosts approximately 10,156 troops at three bases, primarily supporting US Air Force operations.

Spain has around 3,814 US personnel deployed at naval and air bases near the strategic Strait of Gibraltar. Poland maintains a smaller permanent presence of 369 troops, but hosts about 10,000 additional personnel on a rotational basis under NATO initiatives.

Romania is home to 153 permanent US troops, supplemented by rotational forces at bases such as Mihail Kogalniceanu and Deveselu. Hungary has a modest contingent of 77 US personnel stationed at Kecskemet and Papa bases, alongside rotational deployments.

The US military presence in Europe continues to play a crucial role within NATO’s defense framework, positioning forces to respond rapidly to crises and support allied operations across the continent.
