The Houthi movement in Yemen has issued a stern warning about potentially closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial maritime passage connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. This strait is a key artery for global shipping, especially for energy supplies, and its closure could severely disrupt international trade and oil transportation.
The Houthis indicated that such a drastic step might be taken if the United States continues what they describe as interference in peace initiatives. They emphasized that if the strait were to be blocked, no external force would be capable of reopening it, highlighting the seriousness of their threat.
Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Baqir Qalibaf commented on the ongoing negotiations with the United States, acknowledging some progress but noting that significant challenges remain. He criticized the US for contemplating restrictions, labeling these measures as misguided and ignorant, particularly questioning any limitations imposed on maritime navigation.
In a significant development, Qalibaf warned that US minesweepers should not attempt to advance in the region, stating that any such move would be met with immediate military response. He also referenced past Iranian military actions, including targeting enemy drones and an American F-35 fighter jet, underscoring that Iran has already sent a clear message to its adversaries.
These developments come amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, with the Houthis’ threat adding further complexity to the security situation surrounding one of the world’s most strategic waterways.
