Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been experiencing intermittent heavy rainfall since last night, causing flooding in low-lying areas of the twin cities and disrupting traffic flow. Authorities have declared a rain emergency as more downpours are expected throughout the day.
The Meteorological Department has recorded an average rainfall of 95.27mm so far, with Shamsabad receiving the highest amount at 121mm. Other areas include New Katarian with 112mm, Pirwadhai 109mm, H-8 and Kutchery both at 99mm. Additional locations such as Golra, Saidpur, Bokra, and Chaklala have reported rainfall ranging between 48mm and 94mm.
Low-lying neighborhoods in Rawalpindi have been inundated, causing difficulties for residents. Meanwhile, the water level in Nullah Lai has risen significantly at the Gawalmandi point, triggering a flood alert for the city. The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) managing director confirmed the declaration of a rain emergency and stated that the department is on high alert. Staff and heavy machinery have been deployed to critical locations including Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk, Mall Road, and Sadiqabad to clear waterlogged areas. Continuous monitoring of Nullah Lai and other drains across Rawalpindi is underway.
In a coordinated response, district administration teams have been mobilized to ensure efficient drainage operations. Assistant Commissioners are supervising dewatering pumps in vulnerable zones, while officials are overseeing both minor and major storm drains in Islamabad. The Deputy Commissioner is actively monitoring the situation in real time as it unfolds.
Traffic congestion has increased on the Islamabad Expressway and other main roads due to the heavy rain. Islamabad Traffic Police personnel have been deployed citywide to assist commuters and manage traffic flow. The Motorway Police reported rainfall along the M1 between Islamabad and Rashakai, the M2 between Islamabad and Balkasar, and on the Swat Motorway between Burhan and Shah Maqsood.
Authorities have urged motorists and motorcyclists to exercise caution by reducing speed, maintaining safe distances, using fog lights, and staying within their lanes. Drivers are advised to utilize side mirrors, indicators, and seatbelts consistently, while motorcyclists should remain in the extreme left lane and wear helmets. The Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall for Islamabad and its surrounding areas, including Rawalpindi, Taxila, Wah Cantt, Murree, and the Galyat region, indicating that the rain emergency may persist.
