Houthis Declare Naval Blockade on Saudi Arabia Amid US-Iran Conflict Escalation

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement announced on Monday the imposition of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, potentially opening a new front in the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran. This move threatens to disrupt global energy supplies and trade routes beyond the Gulf region.

The declaration comes despite indications that Tehran and Washington are seeking to revive diplomatic efforts aimed at halting the intensifying cycle of attacks that have severely undermined a fragile interim agreement reached last month. Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that mediators had presented proposals to Tehran, signaling ongoing diplomatic engagement, though no specifics were disclosed.

Following the Houthi announcement, oil prices briefly surged but later retreated as traders remained hopeful for a diplomatic resolution. Meanwhile, insurance costs for shipping through the Red Sea increased due to heightened risks to merchant vessels.

Iran has reportedly urged the Houthis to close the Bab el-Mandeb strait if the US continues its attacks on Iranian infrastructure. A full closure of this strategic passage would cut global oil supply by approximately 7 percent, as it would block most Saudi oil exports from leaving the region. This disruption would compound the existing 10 percent reduction in global oil shipments caused by the Gulf conflict.

In their statement, the Houthis’ armed forces declared a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia, describing it as a retaliatory measure in response to what they called an unjust and oppressive Saudi siege on Yemen. The embargo is effective immediately, based on the principle of “an eye for an eye.” Saudi Arabia has yet to issue an official response.

In a significant development on the diplomatic front, a senior Iranian official revealed that Tehran had received a mediator’s proposal for a 10-day ceasefire aimed at salvaging the interim agreement and paving the way for a lasting resolution to the war that began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Details of the ceasefire discussions remain undisclosed.

Separately, Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni requested Pakistan to resume its mediation role in the conflict and subsequently arrived in Islamabad for further talks. This diplomatic initiative follows another night of US airstrikes on Iranian cities and retaliatory attacks by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on US military assets across the region.

US President Donald Trump, facing domestic political pressure over rising gasoline prices and Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, defended the recent strikes on Iran as a response to the deaths of up to three American service members in Iranian attacks. He emphasized that any American casualties caused by Iran would be met with overwhelming retaliation.

The ongoing war has resulted in thousands of deaths, primarily in Iran and Lebanon. Hezbollah fighters, aligned with Tehran, have attacked Israel in solidarity, leading to Israeli military occupation of parts of Lebanon. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is scheduled to meet Trump at the White House to discuss a plan for disarming Hezbollah and securing an Israeli withdrawal.

Meanwhile, Israel maintains a military presence in Gaza following two years of conflict triggered by a Hamas attack on southern Israeli communities on October 7, 2023. Hamas announced the appointment of Khalil Al-Hayya as its overall leader, a move interpreted by analysts as signaling a potentially tougher stance on disarmament demands.

In related developments, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported explosions involving two oil tankers attempting to transit the Bab el-Mandeb strait via an “unsafe” route. It remains unclear if these incidents are connected, and no details about casualties or vessel identities were provided. Additionally, a vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile off Oman’s coast near the Strait of Hormuz.

The US Central Command stated that its ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iran aimed to diminish Tehran’s capacity to target commercial vessels in the strait. The US military also reported redirecting seven commercial ships and disabling one as part of a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Explosions were reported in several Iranian cities, including Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr, and Bandar Imam Khomeini, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries southwest of Tabriz. The IRGC claimed responsibility for ballistic missile strikes on US aircraft at Jordan’s Aqaba airport, military installations in Kuwait, and positions in Syria.

Sirens sounded across Bahrain on Monday, while Kuwait’s army intercepted Iranian drones and reported a second consecutive attack on a desalination plant that caused a fire. These events underscore the escalating regional tensions amid ongoing conflict and diplomatic efforts.
