The long-awaited local government elections in Gilgit-Baltistan have been officially scheduled for August 2, marking a historic return to democratic processes in the region after more than two decades. This announcement came on Wednesday, signaling a major step forward in enhancing local governance and political participation in this strategically important mountainous area.

Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan, a recipient of the Tamgha-e-Shujaat award, outlined the election timeline, noting that nomination papers will be accepted from June 9 through June 15. He highlighted the significance of this event as a milestone in the journey toward democratic decentralization, emphasizing the importance of empowering local communities through representative governance.

In a significant development, the Chief Election Commissioner assured that all necessary preparations are underway to conduct the elections in a transparent and lawful manner. This commitment aims to ensure that the electoral process is fair and credible, fostering trust among voters and political stakeholders alike.

Local government elections in Gilgit-Baltistan have not been held since 2004, making this resumption a critical moment for the region’s political landscape. The return of these elections has been welcomed by various political actors who view it as essential for improving grassroots representation and administrative efficiency. This democratic revival is expected to strengthen the governance framework and promote greater accountability in the region’s local institutions.
