The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan has decided to revert to the previous electoral roll for the upcoming assembly elections due to widespread complaints about inaccuracies in the newly prepared voter list. This move follows numerous reports highlighting errors in the updated register.
In a significant development, the 2026 electoral roll has been officially reinstated to ensure a fair and transparent election process. The revised voter list had indicated a total of 958,480 registered voters in the region, comprising 503,772 males and 454,708 females.
Meanwhile, the elections will feature a total of 396 candidates vying for seats in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly. Independent candidates form the largest group with 266 participants. Among political parties, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leads with 23 candidates, followed by the Istihkam-e-Pakistan Party fielding 15 candidates, and the Pakistan Muslim League presenting 11 contenders.
Notably, female representation remains low, with only eight women contesting in the elections. The Election Commission emphasized that reverting to the old voter list is aimed at addressing data inconsistencies and reinforcing the integrity of the electoral process.
