US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has commended Pakistan’s leadership for its significant role in supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran. He highlighted that recent developments indicate increasing cooperation focused on achieving peace.
Addressing the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore, Hegseth emphasized Pakistan’s active participation in regional diplomatic discussions. He also referenced the broader international efforts to de-escalate the conflict between the US and Iran.
Notably, Hegseth acknowledged the involvement of Pakistan’s top leadership, including Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He described their engagement in peace dialogues as part of a growing framework of collaboration among key stakeholders.
He characterized the situation as reflecting “unexpected developments” in diplomacy, suggesting that ongoing communication among the concerned parties has created opportunities for negotiations aimed at lowering tensions.
Meanwhile, Hegseth also pointed out that former US President Donald Trump contributed to fostering wider diplomatic momentum intended to stabilise relations and prevent further escalation between the two nations.
In a significant development, the Pentagon chief stressed that diplomatic engagement involving major international and regional actors remains crucial, especially in conflicts with broad security and economic consequences.
