Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan has affirmed that the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections will take place on June 7 as planned, refuting social media rumors suggesting any delay. He emphasized that preparations for conducting free, fair, and impartial elections are actively underway.
In a clear statement, the commissioner dismissed all reports about postponement as unfounded. He reiterated the Election Commission’s dedication to ensuring transparent and credible elections in the region, warning that strict measures would be enforced against any violations of the electoral code of conduct.
Ahead of the polls, Raja Shahbaz Khan issued a code of conduct for candidates and political parties to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. He also highlighted that voter lists have been thoroughly updated and made transparent, including voter photographs to facilitate accurate verification.
Modern technology is being utilized in preparing ballot papers and other election materials, allowing every voter to personally verify their photograph and identity details. The commissioner further noted that all documentation related to local government elections has been finalized, with additional updates on local body elections to be shared in due course.
Meanwhile, Nawaz Khan Naji, chief of the Balawaristan National Front, raised concerns about significant discrepancies in the voter lists. He claimed that some voters had been reassigned to constituencies other than their own, warning that such actions could exacerbate divisions and increase resentment among the people, who he said continue to be deprived of their fundamental and constitutional rights.
