Islamabad Enforces Early Market Closures to Support Austerity Measures

The district administration of Islamabad has implemented new regulations requiring markets and various businesses to close earlier than usual as part of the federal government’s ongoing austerity drive. This directive, announced through an official notification on Tuesday, aims to contribute to national efforts to curb energy consumption amid economic challenges.

Under the new guidelines, all shops within the capital city are instructed to cease operations by 8pm. However, certain essential services have been exempted from this restriction to ensure public convenience and safety. Pharmacies, medical laboratories, hospitals, and medical stores will continue to operate beyond the stipulated closing time. Additionally, fuel stations including petrol pumps and CNG outlets, as well as milk shops and sports gymnasiums, are permitted to remain open past 8pm.

Meanwhile, other commercial establishments such as hotels, tandoors, grocery stores, and general retail outlets have been directed to close their doors by 10pm. Similarly, fruit and vegetable vendors along with bakeries must also adhere to this 10pm closing deadline. The administration has further extended this curfew to marriage halls and marquees across Islamabad, mandating their closure by the same hour.

Deputy Commissioner Islamabad emphasized that these measures are aligned with the prime minister’s austerity policy, which focuses on reducing energy consumption to support the country’s economic stability. This initiative reflects the government’s broader strategy to manage resources more efficiently during a period of financial restraint, highlighting Islamabad’s role in setting an example for other regions to follow.
