Media Bodies Raise Alarm Over Global Press Freedom and Journalist Safety

The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing Pakistan’s major media organizations including PBA, APNS, CPNE, AMEND, and PFUJ, has voiced serious concerns about the deteriorating global environment for freedom of expression and the safety of journalists. Marking World Press Freedom Day, the committee emphasized that the past year has been exceptionally challenging for journalism worldwide, with increasing restrictions imposed not only in developing countries but also in developed nations.

In Pakistan, the situation remains troubling, with numerous cases of journalists being killed, harassed, falsely accused, and subjected to violence. The statement highlighted that during international conflicts, especially in Gaza, many journalists lost their lives while carrying out their duties. Media freedom continues to be severely restricted in Afghanistan, while journalists in conflict zones such as Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, and Sudan face grave threats, attacks, and fatalities.

Furthermore, countries like Russia, India, and Iran have seen journalists endure pressure, arrests, and censorship. Notably, even in European nations and the United States—often seen as defenders of democracy and free speech—journalists confront significant challenges. In particular, Hungary and Poland have exhibited alarming declines in media freedom and institutional independence. In France, reporters encountered obstacles and pressure while covering protests and during clashes with security forces. Meanwhile, in the United States, government and presidential attitudes toward the media have fostered an environment of uncertainty and authoritarian tendencies, undermining free journalism.

In a significant development, the committee condemned the deliberate targeting of journalists in conflict zones, aimed at silencing the flow of information to the global public. Additionally, worldwide economic pressures and financial struggles within the media industry have exacerbated difficulties for journalists, leading to job insecurity, salary reductions, and increased professional challenges.

Despite these hardships, the JAC paid tribute to journalists and media institutions globally for their unwavering dedication and sacrifices in delivering truthful information to the public. The statement reaffirmed their commitment to defending freedom of expression, democratic principles, and the public’s right to information. The media bodies pledged to continue fulfilling their constitutional, legal, and democratic responsibilities responsibly, promoting transparency and truth in society despite adverse conditions.
