Iranian Envoy Highlights Pakistan’s Key Role in US-Iran Talks

Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam emphasized on Sunday that Islamabad continues to play a pivotal role as a mediator in the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States. He stated that Pakistan remains the key intermediary and no changes have been made regarding this role. The ambassador noted that progress in the talks hinges on a shift in the approach taken by Washington.

His remarks followed US President Donald Trump’s recent skepticism about the chances of a new Iranian peace proposal succeeding. Reports from Iranian news agencies Tasnim and Fars revealed on Saturday that Tehran had submitted a 14-point peace plan to Pakistan, which acts as the mediator. The proposal includes ending hostilities on all fronts and establishing a new framework for managing the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Ambassador Moghadam confirmed in his interview that Iran had relayed this new negotiation plan to the US through Pakistan. He praised Islamabad’s efforts as valuable and central to the diplomatic process currently underway. The envoy reiterated that Tehran has been transparent about its positions and demands, stressing that any meaningful advancement depends on a change in US policy and behavior.

He further asserted that Iran would not compromise on its national interests or defense capabilities. The talks between Iran and the US have been stalled since the ceasefire agreement on April 8, which followed a round of peace negotiations held in Islamabad that failed to resolve the conflict. The Pakistani government played a crucial role in brokering the ceasefire during the six-week conflict that erupted after joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.

The conflict has significantly affected the global economy, particularly after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy shipping route. Although Tehran briefly reopened the strait for commercial traffic, it was closed again due to alleged US violations of the ceasefire and the ongoing naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Meanwhile, the Iranian ambassador remarked that the international community is closely watching Tehran’s clear and logical stance, while criticizing what he described as inconsistency in US policy. He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to diplomacy, stating that Washington must abandon its aggressive posture and respect Iran’s rights for negotiations to progress.

Additionally, Ambassador Moghadam highlighted the strengthening political, economic, and trade relations between Pakistan and Iran. He pointed out that the border crossings between the two countries are vital for bilateral trade and enhancing regional connectivity.
