Trump Rejects Iran’s Proposal as Ceasefire Holds but Tensions Persist

US President Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s recent proposal for renewed talks, indicating that diplomatic progress between Washington and Tehran remains elusive despite a fragile ceasefire. The latest offer, reportedly conveyed through Pakistan on Thursday, failed to meet US expectations.

Speaking at the White House, Trump stated, “At this moment, I’m not satisfied with what they’re offering,” without providing detailed reasons for his rejection. The ceasefire, which took effect on April 8, has paused active combat, but significant disagreements persist over Iran’s nuclear program and control of strategic waterways. A subsequent round of negotiations has not yet been arranged following a brief meeting between senior officials from both countries in Islamabad last month.

Trump characterized Iran’s leadership as divided and internally conflicted, suggesting this fragmentation complicates diplomatic efforts. While acknowledging some progress, he cautioned that a breakthrough remains uncertain, emphasizing that Iran’s demands include conditions he cannot accept. The United States continues to weigh diplomacy against the possibility of escalating military measures.

US media reports indicate Washington proposed amendments to Tehran’s plan, including stipulations related to Iran’s nuclear activities during negotiations. However, neither side has publicly revealed the full details of these proposals.

At a political rally in Florida, Trump reaffirmed his stance, insisting the US would reject any weak or rushed agreement. He stressed that any resolution must address fundamental issues to prevent future conflicts.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated Tehran’s willingness to engage in diplomacy, provided the US adopts a less confrontational approach. He also highlighted on social media that Iran’s military remains ready to respond to any threats.

Pakistan continues to serve as a mediator in the ongoing crisis, facilitating dialogue between the two nations. Officials in Islamabad confirm that diplomatic efforts persist, although significant obstacles remain before formal negotiations can resume.

In a related development, Trump notified Congress that hostilities related to the conflict had effectively ceased with the April ceasefire, as the War Powers Resolution deadline approached. This legislation restricts the president’s authority to conduct military operations without congressional consent.

In his letter to lawmakers, Trump argued that no active combat had occurred since early April, asserting the situation no longer qualifies as ongoing hostilities. However, critics, particularly Democratic members of Congress, dispute this view, citing the continued US military presence in the region as evidence that the conflict is not fully resolved.

While Trump has questioned the constitutionality of the War Powers Resolution, legal experts maintain that its constraints on presidential war powers remain contentious. With negotiations stalled and positions hardened, both diplomacy and the ceasefire appear increasingly fragile.
