Karachi police have taken into custody a young man after an alleged assault on a police officer during a roadside checkpoint operation. The episode, which was recorded on video and widely shared on social media, triggered an official investigation leading to the arrest.
The incident took place in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area amid a snap vehicle inspection. Police stopped a car that raised suspicion due to its fitted police-like lights and a number plate resembling official law enforcement markings.
Video footage circulating online showed the man, identified by authorities as the son of a female police officer, grabbing a sub-inspector by the collar and exchanging heated words. The police subsequently seized the vehicle and arrested the individual, though specific charges have not yet been disclosed.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza instructed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South to carry out a thorough investigation. The inquiry aims to scrutinize the behavior of all parties involved in the confrontation.
Following the initial video, another clip emerged from the suspect’s family, presenting a different perspective of the encounter. This footage featured a tense verbal exchange between the man and Station House Officer Shazan Shakeel of the Qayyumabad check post. At times, attempts to calm the situation were visible.
The second video also showed the officer holding the car door and trying to take the vehicle’s keys, as shared by the arrested man’s father. Police have launched a probe to establish the exact sequence of events and to determine if any misconduct occurred on either side.
