Atletico Madrid delivered a disciplined and resolute display to eliminate 10-man Barcelona from the UEFA Champions League, progressing 3-2 on aggregate despite a 2-1 loss at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Entering the second leg with a 2-0 lead from the first encounter, Atletico faced a determined Barcelona side that quickly shifted the momentum with two first-half goals.

Teenager Lamine Yamal gave Barcelona an ideal start, capitalizing on a defensive error by Clement Lenglet to score within four minutes. The young winger exhibited remarkable composure, calmly slotting the ball past goalkeeper Juan Musso. Barcelona then doubled their advantage in the 24th minute when Ferran Torres expertly finished after a precise pass from Dani Olmo, leveling the aggregate score and placing Atletico under significant pressure.

Atletico responded assertively, refusing to succumb to the mounting pressure. Their reply came in the 31st minute as Marcos Llorente advanced down the right flank and delivered a pinpoint cross for Ademola Lookman, who confidently found the net to narrow the deficit and regain momentum for his team. From that point, Atletico grew more dominant, while Barcelona’s high defensive line began to reveal weaknesses.

The second half intensified with increased physicality and tension. Barcelona briefly thought they had regained control when Ferran Torres scored again, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Frustrations mounted within Hansi Flick’s squad as Atletico’s defense remained steadfast. A crucial moment arrived late when Eric Garcia was sent off for fouling Alexander Sorloth, who was clear on goal, reducing Barcelona to ten men and effectively ending their chances of forcing extra time.

Atletico expertly managed the final minutes, maintaining composure and withstanding eight minutes of added time to secure their semi-final berth. Diego Simeone’s side showcased their trademark resilience, reaching the last four for the first time since 2017 and keeping their hopes of a maiden Champions League title alive.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain delivered a composed and clinical performance at Anfield to eliminate Liverpool from the competition, securing a 4-0 aggregate win after a 2-0 victory on the night. With a commanding advantage from the first leg in Paris, PSG entered the second leg confident but were tested by a spirited Liverpool side energized by their passionate home supporters.

Liverpool started strongly, pressing aggressively in an effort to overturn the deficit early on. However, PSG remained organized and patient, absorbing pressure while waiting for opportunities to counterattack. The breakthrough came in the 72nd minute when Ousmane Dembélé, facing his former club, curled a precise shot into the bottom corner following a swift move involving Bradley Barcola, silencing the Anfield crowd and effectively ending Liverpool’s hopes of a comeback.

Despite Liverpool’s continued efforts to respond, PSG’s defensive structure held firm under sustained pressure. The French champions maintained calm possession, preventing Liverpool from gaining momentum in the attacking third. As Liverpool pushed more players forward, gaps appeared at the back, which PSG exploited in stoppage time when Barcola set up Dembélé for his second goal of the night, sealing a comprehensive victory.

This result confirms PSG’s place in the Champions League semi-finals for another season, continuing their strong European campaign. They will next face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the semi-finals. Liverpool, on the other hand, exit the tournament after failing to overturn the first-leg deficit despite periods of intense attacking play at Anfield.

Ousmane Dembélé emerged as the standout performer of the tie, scoring two crucial goals that underscored PSG’s attacking prowess and clinical edge. As the Champions League progresses into its final stages, PSG solidify their status as serious contenders for European glory, while Liverpool are left to reflect on missed opportunities and defensive shortcomings over both legs.
