Steve Borthwick, the head coach of England Rugby, has received a strong endorsement from former player Mike Tindall following a challenging Six Nations tournament. England endured their worst performance since the competition expanded in 2000, losing four out of five matches.
Concerns about Borthwick’s future have intensified, especially after Rugby Football Union chairman Bill Sweeney initially declined to offer long-term support. Nevertheless, Tindall is calling on fans and critics to remain patient with the “quietly spoken and determined” coach.
“I’ve known him since he was 16, and I’m confident he’s working tirelessly to address the issues,” Tindall said. He highlighted the positive culture Borthwick has fostered within the team, emphasizing that the players continue to thrive under his leadership.
Defending Borthwick against the wave of criticism following England’s recent struggles, Tindall remarked, “We had a team that enjoyed a winning streak, then suffered four losses, and suddenly Steve is the scapegoat. Every team experiences difficult periods.”
In a significant development, Tindall urged supporters to allow Borthwick the space to rebuild and guide England back to success ahead of the World Cup, encouraging them to trust in his steady and focused approach.
