Senator Mushahid Hussain and Ex-Israeli General Debate ‘Greater Israel’ Agenda

A tense televised debate unfolded between Senator Mushahid Hussain and former Israeli national security adviser and Major General Yakov Amidror, spotlighting deep divisions over the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Mushahid asserted that the war was part of a broader “Greater Israel” strategy, emphasizing that Iran had emerged stronger despite ongoing hostilities.

The discussion took place on Al Arabia English, focusing on competing claims by the United States and Iran regarding a proposed peace agreement and the wider strategic implications of the conflict. Notably, the US and Israel initiated strikes against Iran on February 28, triggering regional instability and global concerns, especially disruptions to oil supplies.

Amidror defended Israel’s military operations, stating they were progressing as planned and significantly weakening Iran’s capabilities. He dismissed suggestions that Israel was running low on defensive resources, affirming that the country could maintain its military efforts for several weeks. He also described the situation inside Israel as stable, noting that fewer interceptors had been deployed than initially anticipated.

When Senator Mushahid questioned the effectiveness of the Iron Dome missile defense system, often regarded as nearly infallible, Amidror praised its performance, claiming it intercepted 90% of incoming attacks. However, he conceded that most interceptions were actually carried out by the Arrow-3 system rather than the Iron Dome.

In contrast, Mushahid highlighted Iran’s resilience and strategic advantage, particularly its control over the Strait of Hormuz. He argued that both Washington and Tel Aviv had misjudged the situation, framing the conflict as part of a larger effort to politically reshape the Middle East in line with a “Greater Israel” vision. Mushahid insisted that Iran held the upper hand in the conflict, asserting that neither US President Donald Trump nor Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu anticipated Iran would remain robust into the fourth week of fighting.

He further claimed that Iran had effectively kept the Strait of Hormuz closed, marking a significant strategic success that exposed flaws in the US-Israeli plan. Mushahid, the strategy pursued by Washington and Tel Aviv had “badly failed,” forcing Trump to pursue peace talks after the conflict unfolded differently than expected.

The debate also included US analyst Brandon Weichert, who cautioned that the conflict risked evolving into a prolonged war of attrition with increasing economic and political costs for the United States. He noted that neither side seemed prepared for serious negotiations, raising fears of further escalation.

This exchange underscored the contrasting perspectives on which side currently holds the advantage, with divergent views on military effectiveness, economic pressures, and political determination continuing to influence interpretations of the war’s trajectory.
