PCB Issues Show-Cause Notice to Naseem Shah Over Controversial Social Media Post

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formally issued a show-cause notice to fast bowler Naseem Shah, citing an alleged breach of his central contract terms and the board’s media policies. This disciplinary action follows a contentious post made by Naseem on his X account, where he questioned the special treatment given to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) opening ceremony.

In the post, Naseem Shah asked, “why is she treated like the queen at Lord’s?”—a remark that sparked considerable attention given the high-profile nature of the event held at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. Maryam Nawaz was present at the ceremony, which added to the sensitivity surrounding the comment. The PCB has requested Naseem to provide a formal explanation within a specified deadline, after which the board will decide on further disciplinary measures based on his response and the applicable regulations.

This incident highlights the increasing scrutiny on players’ conduct on social media platforms, especially when their comments intersect with political figures or sensitive matters. The PCB has maintained a strict stance on upholding the integrity and professionalism of its contracted players, emphasizing adherence to media guidelines designed to prevent controversies that could affect the sport’s image.

Meanwhile, Naseem Shah addressed the situation by posting on X that his account had recently been hacked but has since been recovered. No additional comments have been made by the player or the PCB regarding the ongoing proceedings. The board’s move to issue a show-cause notice underscores the importance it places on maintaining discipline and decorum among its athletes, particularly in the public eye during major events like the PSL.
